Much to my surprise there have only been a little over 200 gay couples 'unioned' in New Jersey since the stated decided to recognize civil unions.

Civil unions are a prime example of separate but equal.  If gay couples apply for civil unions, then they get the same legal benefits of marriage -- just not the title.

I just wonder why all of the gay couples are choosing not to take advantage of this new law, the closest thing to marriage offered at this time in their state.

After dating for more than four years, journalist Antonio Medina, 38, and economist Jorge Cerpa, 31, signed documents that officially recognized them as a couple under a banner that read: "Civil Union Law: Your right to choose."

Medina and Cerpa were the first gay couple united under Mexico City's new Civil Union Law

The new law grants same-sex couples inheritance rights and social benefits similar to those enjoyed by married heterosexual couples. It reflects a growing acceptance of homosexuality in what has traditionally been a macho society, as well as a willingness by Mexico City - the second municipality in the country to legalise same-sex unions - to join the international debate on gay 'marriage'.

Congratulations to these two and hopefully many more who will become 'husband and husband' under this new law!!

Hawaii lawmakers shot down a proposal to create civil unions for same-sex couples by deciding not to vote on the proposed legislation.

Witnesses say over 100 people attended the House Judiciary Committee hearing holding signs supporting civil unions.  Several hundred other submitted written testimony.

Representative killed the bill by declining to vote at all.  They aren't required to tell the public why, but after five hours of testimony, this simply shows that the bill doesn't have the support it needs to become a law.

After five hours of testimony, though, the committee declined to vote. Representatives offered little explanation to the public, but it was a sign that the bill lacked enough support to become law.

As I continue to say, 2007 is the year of the gay!

Gay couples in Illinois may be able to get soon get married if Rep. Greg Harris has his way.  Harris introduced a bill today to change the wording of the state's constitution to define "marriage" as a union between "two persons" rather than a man and woman.

"Illinois is a heartland state but has always been a leader in civil rights and social justice issues," said Rep. Harris (D-Chicago). "It's the right thing to do."

The bill has plenty of opposition, but if passed Illinois would become the second state to allow same sex marriages behind Massachusetts.

Many New Jersey same sex couples were married at the stroke of midnight.  Several hundred gay couples received civil union licenses on Monday meaning they could official tie the knot at when clock hit twelve.

New Jersey is now the third state in the nation to offer civil unions.  Civil unions offer same-sex couples the legal benefits but not the title of marriage. Vermont and Connecticut also offer civil unions, and California offers domestic partnerships. Massachusetts remains the only state to allow same-sex marriages.

New Jersey gay couples may not be the only ones celebrating gay unions this week, homosexual couples in Rhode Island who were married in the neighboring state of Massachusetts may get the same rights as heterosexual couples very soon.  As a matter of fact, they may already have them?!

The R.I. state attorney general said today that the absence of a law banning gay marriage leaves no strong reason to deny recognition to gay marriages performed in Massachusetts, the only state where such unions are legal.

"It's essentially guidance. It's my interpretation of the law," he said.

Attorney General Patrick Lynch released that statement along with this on Wednesday:

"Rhode Island will recognize same sex marriages lawfully performed in Massachusetts as marriages in Rhode Island."

I wonder if New York would ever do that for New Jersey?

Florida Governor Charlie Crist slowed down efforts to constitutionally ban gay marriage in his state this week, saying the Republican Party of Florida should not give money to help the effort.

Prior to Crist's November election, the party gave $300,000 to Florida4Marriage.org for the group's unsuccessful petition drive to get the ban on the statewide ballot last year. That made the Republican Party the largest contributor to the group, which has collected about $430,000 as it now aims for the 2008 election.

Despite the Governor's comments, the Republican Party of Florida's new chairman said that the party would support the measure.

Crist first said on Tuesday that he thinks the party should spend its money on other things:

"like elections for example ... I think that the people care about issues like insurance premiums, they care about property taxes, they care about public safety. And I think it's important that not only those of us in government, but the party focus on those issues too."

A Republican with some common sense?  I'm shocked!

According to the history books, it was the day that San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom granted marriage licenses to gays and lesbians in the liberal California city.

According to the CA government, he broke the law - so the day should be forgotten.  On Tuesday, hundreds of the 4,000 LGBT couples gathered at city hall to mark their third anniversary.

Some homophobes in New Jersey are fighting back against the state's new law granting equal rights to same sex couples in the form of a civil union.

Gay marriage opponents are collecting signatures on a petition in hopes of persuading lawmakers to amend the state constitution to include a definition of marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

You already lost.  Get over it.  Jersey fags are getting married, and there isn't anything you can do about it!
