Florida Governor says no more money to stop gay marriage

Florida Governor Charlie Crist slowed down efforts to constitutionally ban gay marriage in his state this week, saying the Republican Party of Florida should not give money to help the effort.

Prior to Crist's November election, the party gave $300,000 to Florida4Marriage.org for the group's unsuccessful petition drive to get the ban on the statewide ballot last year. That made the Republican Party the largest contributor to the group, which has collected about $430,000 as it now aims for the 2008 election.

Despite the Governor's comments, the Republican Party of Florida's new chairman said that the party would support the measure.

Crist first said on Tuesday that he thinks the party should spend its money on other things:

"like elections for example ... I think that the people care about issues like insurance premiums, they care about property taxes, they care about public safety. And I think it's important that not only those of us in government, but the party focus on those issues too."

A Republican with some common sense?  I'm shocked!
