Mel Gibson flips out at college screening of 'Apocalypto'
Mel Gibson should obviously be on medication. What happened to the friendly Mel that we all knew and loved?
On Thursday night, Gibson made a stop at Cal State Northridge to promote his film 'Apocalypto.' Central American Studies Professor Dr. Alicia Estrada asked Gibson about the negative portrayal of Mayans in the film. The teacher went on to say that Mayans have suffered from death and poverty but were depicted as ignorant and bloodthirsty in Mel's movie.
Dr. Estrada then yielded the floor to members of the Mayan community, and that's where all hell broke loose. Here's how the school's newspaper described it:
Members of the Mayan community were present and Estrada passed the microphone to Mayan community leader Felipe Perez who read in Spanish, the Mayan community's response to the film. Estrada translated, but because of the audience uproar, she could not be heard.
While Estrada and Perez spoke, CTVA students and others in the audience booed, yelled, "This is America, speak English!" and shouted for them to sit down and shut up.
Due to the yelling, Gibson said, "I can't understand what you're saying."
Security personnel began pushing the speaker and turned off Perez's microphone. Gibson said to let them talk, and the microphone was turned back on.
Acting like a maniac, Mel dropped a series of F-bombs concluding with "I think you're a fucking troublemaker, so fuck off."
The professor said she believes the film is obviously racist, but Gibson responded by saying, "I don't think it's racist at all, and I resent you saying that it is."
Dr. Estrada said she wants an apology not only to her, but to the university and to the Mayan community.

You know, Mr. Gibson has the right to think whatever is in his heart and mind. Do I always agree with him? No, but that can be said about anyone on any given day. I am a moderate and generally side with the "liberal" side. I find it ironic that he is chastised by this group of people who are in a university that promotes free speech. I don't think he owes the Mayan community any apology. Get a life and move on with your lives..people! You don't like the movie, then don't go to it. It's like the ultra religious groups that want the totally control the media, the movies and just about every person's thoughts and actions. It they don't like a movie, if they don't like a television program, then stay home..Leave the rest of us the hell alone..
EDUCATION ---THATS HOW YOU STOP RACISM----EVERYONE IS FREE TO SEE THIS MOVIE OR NOT ---BUT HE HAS A CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT TO MAKE , DONT GO SEE IT ,THE,Y LOOSE MONEY . GIBSON WON,T MAKE ANY MORE MOVIES LIKE THIS .WE HAVE THE POWER . YOU WANT TO PROTEST , MAKE A MOVIE ABOUT MEL GIBSON , BUT ANYTHING YOU WANT IN IT . YOU CAN DISAGREE WITH AHAT HE SAYS , BUT HE HAS THE RIGHT TO SAY IT . WHEN YOU TRY TO STOP PEOPLE FROM SAYING OR PUPLISHING THERE VIEWS ,THAN YOU GOT COMUNISM. THE LESSON HERE , HIT HIM WHERE IT HURTS , IN THE POCKET BOOK , CHOOSE TO SPEND YOUR MONEY ON SOMETHING ELSE , AND MATURE THINKING
Mel Gibson is subjected to unfair scrutiny. His movies are regarded across the board to have 100% more historical integrity than the usual effluent pumped out by Hollywood.
She was just being disruptive. Here is another version of the story by an audience member which reveals:
A) Gibson was initially very patient with the professor and
B) She had it coming.

The above 3 comments were made by soap boxing douche bags who don't recognize racism when they see it.
You're retards simply by believing that you have something to contribute.
You fail.
:)
To the first post by "John Lentz": Freedom of speech does include Mel Gibson, you are correct. However, that doesn't mean he isn't an asshole, nor does it make anyone immune of what they say. Of course there should not be punishment by law for speech, but really, we have the same right that lets us say what we want back at him.
To the second post by "jim": Less caps, man. Also I think you're mixing up communism with something else, perhaps a fascist communism like under Stalin? Either way, doesn't really matter... You come off as crazy because of your erratic speech, here. My advice is for you to take your time writing this shit. I agree with your point, though.
To the third post by "sd": Patience is expected and not a privilege. They came to ask questions... questions that would obviously be "controversial". Should controversy hide behind curtains? I think she should have said what she wanted to say if he was taking questions. What it seems is that the staff there (like in the taser incident) actually took the microphone away. This led to Miss Estrada getting frustrated for being silenced. I think in this society that would be an extremely common reaction. What makes it Mel's problem is that he lost his cool and called her a "fucking trouble maker". Who is at fault? That's your opinion, I suppose. Since this was a social dispute with no violence there is no problem anyway, at least with the law. I'd still say that Gibson is a douche, though. Also, your source (the college student's live journal entry) was childish. "My vagina cried".. at least admit that when posting it, eh?
To ...anonymous: how do i shot contribute?
OVERALL?:
The incident is of little importance, but respect is extremely important.
Everyone is to blame -- same with the taser incident at the Kerry thing. The staff, Kerry, and the student himself all fucked up a little. The staff probably fucked up the most though... (off topic!)
Anyway, Gibson is a washed up racist with money to spend on frivolous things.
Does this incident make him racist? No, I'd say the jewish cop incident does. After that there is no need for more "evidence".
So... fuck it. Just respect the right to freedom of speech.
Personally I fucking hate when people bash activists or whoever speaks up, but in the process is using their right to freedom of speech by ranting about it publicly. Eh...
