Gay rights legislation makes its way through Congress
Passing any sort of gay rights legislation has basically been impossible under a Republican ruled Congress. However, now that Democrats rule both the Senate and the House of Representatives, things are looking up for the gays.
Another reason why 2007 is the year of the gay...
It looks like at least two measures will easily win approval this year: a hate-crimes bill that would cover offenses motivated by anti-gay bias, and a measure that would outlaw workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation.
A measure to repeal the "don't ask, don't tell" policy that bans openly gay and lesbian Americans from serving in the military will also be introduced this week, but it doesn't seem as likely to pass.
All three of these proposals have come up before, but have never passed.
Even if all of three of the bills pass, President Bush must sign them to become law. No one knows how the conservative, anti-gay President will react.

It seems incredible that the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" farce in the US military will not pass in the US legislature.
Better not tell the law makers in Congress and the Commander in Chief of the US Military that their servicemen and women could well be subjected to having an openly gay or lesbian in their midst when the US and their major ally, the United Kingdom, get together for military operations.
All three measures mentioned above have been in force in the UK for years.
