Did we win in New Jersey?

The New Jersey Supreme Court has handed down the decision that gay and lesbian couples should get the same rights as straight couples, but they're leaving the rest up to the state legislature.

The state Supreme Court said on Wednesday afternoon that the State Legislature has six months to decide whether gay couples will be able to marry or participate in civil unions. Either way, the court determined that gay and lesbian couples should have the same exact rights as straight couples do no matter what title is given to the act.

That's a good thing, in my opinion. This way the outcome should NOT affect the mid-term elections across the nation. I belive that if in fact the court ruled that marriage is ok and all that, it would have created an uproar that we really don't want. Also, this gives those who are in a 'virtual tie' with the devils...er...i mean republicans the chance to create the legislation AFTER the elections. Either way, we are equal no matter what you call it, and I think I speak for us all when I say, that was all we only wanted.

to NJ: shit or get off the pot. that is such a half assed decision.

What would happen if the legislature voted to deny marriage and marriage rights to the same-sex couples?

I am pretty happy with the decision, but I think now we have a lot of work to do. We have to write and lobby the NJ legislature to make sure they do the right thing.

Ultimately it's a great decision. Much better than NY's Supreme Court ruling. 4 to 3 voted for this ruling in NJ, the 3 wanted Marriage, the 4 wanted it up to legislature.

NJ will have Civil Unions. Which really means "Seperate But Equal". This case will not end. But at least no matter what gays get the same rights (by law).
